For nearly 10 straight years, the number of cryptocurrency ATMs installed globally grew steadily. But that changed in late 2022.

According to data from Coin ATM Radar, there were 33,628 Bitcoin ATMs worldwide as of January 1, 2024, an 11.1% drop from the 37,827 machines recorded on January 1, 2023. This marks the first year-over-year decline after a decade of consistent expansion in the crypto ATM industry.

The peak number of installed cryptocurrency ATMs was 39,376 in August 2022. Since then, the numbers have trended down, especially in the United States which saw a 15.4% drop last year from 32,672 machines to 27,631. The U.S. still accounts for 82% of all global crypto ATMs.

Meanwhile, countries like Australia, Canada, Spain and Poland continued adding more Bitcoin ATMs in 2023.

Major crypto ATM manufacturers like BitAccess and Genesis Coin saw declines in net new machine installations last year. But competitors General Bytes and Bitcoin Depot, which went public in 2023, kept growing their market share.

There are now 498 crypto ATM operators across 71 countries globally. Bitcoin remains the most widely supported cryptocurrency at these machines, followed by other major coins like Bitcoin Cash, Ether and Litecoin.
