Google Commits €25M to Boost AI Skills in Europe
Google has announced a commitment of €25 million towards enhancing AI skills and training across Europe, focusing on supporting underprivileged and vulnerable groups. This investment is part of a broader effort to expand access to advanced technologies throughout the continent.
The funds will be distributed by Google's philanthropic branch, Google.org, and will be accessible region-wide. An initial allocation of €10 million is earmarked for improving AI competencies among workers.
The distribution process will be carried out in partnership with the not-for-profit organization, the Centre for Public Impact. Community representatives can apply to receive training in foundational AI, offered in various local languages.
This initiative falls under Google's new AI Opportunity Initiative for Europe, which also includes enhanced support for start-ups and the broadening of existing free online AI training courses into more languages.
Google EMEA President Matt Brittin, in a blog post, emphasized the importance of making AI inclusive and accessible to all, stating that this approach is crucial for realizing the full benefits of the technology. He highlighted Europe's potential to lead in leveraging AI for economic strength and equity, pointing to the prospects of more efficient industries, fulfilling jobs, and the creation of new employment opportunities.
