The Ethereum Foundation has confirmed the successful activation of the Dencun network upgrade across all testnets, as per their latest blog post on Tuesday.

Two years since its initial discussion at ETHDenver, and after numerous testing calls and development networks, the foundation is set to implement Proto-Danksharding on the Ethereum mainnet. The scheduled activation is set for March 13, during epoch 269568, occurring at 13:55 UTC or 8:55 am Eastern Time.

Galaxy's Christine Kim shared on X that March 13 had been anticipated as the activation date, though the precise time had not been previously specified.

To ensure compatibility with the new upgrade, stakers are advised to update their beacon nodes and validator clients. As reported by Kim on February 22, all client teams, with the exception of Lodestar, have launched their final software versions supporting the Dencun upgrade.

This upcoming upgrade, which has already been tested on the Holešky testnet as well as the Goerli and Sepolia testnets, will introduce proto-danksharding to Ethereum. Under EIP-4844, this feature allows rollups to add “blobs” of data to a beacon node, which are not accessible by the EVM and are set to be automatically deleted after 1-3 months. The introduction of blobs aims to reduce data transmission costs, ultimately lowering transaction fees for end-users.

The Ethereum Foundation noted that the name 'Dencun' derives from a blend of the star Deneb and the Devcon 3 location, Cancun, symbolizing the union of cosmic and community elements in this significant upgrade.
