Orbit Chain Bridge Exploited for $81 Million in Latest DeFi Hack
Orbit Chain, a platform enabling communication across blockchains, was the victim of a $81 million exploit. Hackers attacked the project's cross-chain bridge after using privacy protocol Tornado Cash to obfuscate transactions.
The stolen funds consisting of 26,741 ETH ($64 million) and $18 million in DAI stablecoins remain unmoved in Ethereum wallets according to Orbit Chain. Total value locked on the platform plunged from $152 million to just $71 million due to the hack.
Orbit Chain's native token ORC dropped over 13% following news of the exploit, though it has since recovered in price. This latest hack comes as decentralised finance (DeFi) protocols saw nearly $2 billion in funds stolen in 2023, per research from DeFi security application.
Some suspect known North Korean hacking entity Lazarus Group could be behind this attack given similar techniques used in past exploits netting over $3 billion.
